hello,
as you have only a FAT drive in your Slim ( then you have a 9504 Slim) and you can only extract the KEY of your Slim as you did, then you can not use the Key Alone to put it in a Slim drive or PCB (including Matrix Freedom PCB) because the Slim DVD fw requires special data with the key called the key sectors or key area to be able to store the key correctly into the Slim fw (9504/0272/0225/0404/1071)
But anyway you needed a Slim drive flashed with the correct FW in order to update your dashboard version, depending on the current status of your Dash/console you may need to flash the Matrix Freedom PCB with any Original or custom FW 9504 or 0272 (try with 9504 first) and the DVD KEY is not important for this step, you can leave it all "0000...." or "FFFF..." or whatever value, then the update will complete and you will have an updated Dashboard, but the DVD/PCB won't be able to play games off course.
After this, you must use latest FW LT2.0 or LT3.0 (note that LT3.0 will require you to patch/burn all the XGD3 backups again) and flash it with your Key back into the FAT drive used before (with the new updated dash) to have a fully working up-to-date console.
About flashing the Freedom PCB/Drive with the 0272 FW and having only the DVD KEY at hand, you can try something but it's not guaranteed to work, as you can't inject the Key and save the FW using JF (because the key won't be saved properly when u open the FW file again) then you can try to use the Latest Lizard Toolbox version, open the CFW Generator Tab ---> Advanced View, and in Destination / Target Firmware open the CFW 0272 (in your case) and press the small button on the right side of the DVD KEY and select "Allow me to change this value" , paste your KEY and save the FW, the Toolbox will issue many warning about the invalid Key Area and about generating a new Key Area, accept all and save the FW, then flash it into the Freedom PCB/Drive and test it into your console ( this is not safe in case you intend to play online )
Good Luck
